Microchip Identification

Why Microchip?

Each year thousands of lost and abandoned animals are taken in by shelters and humane societies across North America.  Some of these animals never make it home because they can’t be identified.

Microchipping identifies your pet and links the animal back to you.

  • Only true permanent method of pet identification.

  • Best chance of your pet returning to you after becoming missing.

  • Quick and painless procedure, similar to a vaccination.

  • Lasts for the lifetime of your pet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an animal microchip?

The 24PetWatch microchip is a tiny chip, the size of a grain of rice.  It is permanently implanted in your pet.   Each chip has a unique identification number that links your pet to your personal contact information so that you can be notified of your pet’s recovery as soon as possible.

 How does it work?

The chip is powered by a scanner which sends a signal to the chip and receives the unique id number stored on it. Each animal brought to the Wilbarger Humane Society is scanned to determine if it has a microchip or not.

If a microchip is present, a WHS staff member will contact 24PetWatch Lost Pet Recovery Service.  The Service will give the owner information to the WHS staff member, who will then contact you and reunite you with your pet.  In some cases, the 24PetWatch staff will contact the owner directly.

Where can I get my pet microchipped?

The Wilbarger Humane Society offers this service to any pet owner.  The brand used by WHS is 24PetWatch...a lost pet recovery network that provides registration for all brands of microchips in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

My dog always wears a collar and tags.  Why do I need to microchip it?

Collars and tags can be removed or get lost.  Tattooing can become illegible over time.  Microchips are the only truly permanent method of identifying your dog.

I have a cat.  Should I microchip it?

Yes, cats are naturally curious and unpredictable.  If your cat strays away from the safety of your home, a microchip is your cat’s best chance of a fast return.

Does microchipping hurt the animal?

Animal microchips are about the size of a grain of rice.  They are typically implanted just beneath the surface of the skin between the shoulder blades. The process is similar to receiving vaccination through a needle.  The pain level is about the same.  Most animals don’t even react when the microchip is implanted.

How much does it cost?

WHS charges $15.00 for the microchip, for implanting it into your pet, and for entering your contact information with 24PetWatch online website.
